Rim Albaharani
Mubarak Al-Thani
In continuation of one of our flagship exhibition series, 40 Minus, the series showcases works by Arab artists under the age of 40 whose artistic practices show considerable promise. 40 Minus encourages and supports emerging artists by allowing them to present a professional exhibition while working closely with a skilled curator.
For this edition, we present the exhibition Urban Perspectives, featuring works by Mubarak Al-Thani and Rim Albahrani. In this exhibition, both artists have created works that react to the multifaceted experience of living in cities, exploring the social, emotional, and visual dimensions of contemporary urban life.
Through her paintings and sculptures, Albharani explores preconceived notions of identity while challenging the socially constructed concept of ‘home as identity.’ The various shapes and arrangements of houses in her artwork act as symbols that redress the notion that our identities are predetermined and settled.
In her artistic practice, Albahrani employs a multitude of techniques and mediums. Her abstract depictions of cities and houses continue to challenge the discourse of belonging and ‘un-belonging’ in the ever-evolving definition of home.
The “Urban Perspectives” exhibition explores the core essence of cities by transcending boundaries and looking at cities from above, a rather forgotten perspective. In his works, Mubarak tries to abstractly scan and archive elements of cities that are uniquely shaped from a bird’s-eye view. Blurring the lines between the horizontal and vertical, the artwork captures things that cities have in common based on humans’ spatial needs.
