al markhiya gallery is founded at Souq Waqif in Doha, Qatar.

Al markhiya gallery, is founded as part of the al markhiya group featuring work by young Qatari artists dedicated to exhibiting and promoting Arabic artwork. Established initially at Souq Waquif, the organisation began to shape a vision of nurturing and promoting Arab art, both locally and globally.

1st Edition of the exhibition 40 Minus opens at Souq Waqif

Al markhiya gallery launches 40 Minus series of annual exhibitions featuring works by Arab artists below the age of 40, whose artistic practice shows considerable promise.  40 Minus was conceived as an important support for new creative voices in Arab art. The event also serves as a vital networking forum and meeting place where artists and audiences connect. 

Al markhiya presents their first group exhibition "Isharat" in Souq Wakiq

This first group exhibition of Arab Artworks at al markhiya considered artist’s idea about the agreeing and disagreeing.

Al markhiya gallery establishes a permanent exhibition space at Katara Cultural Village

In December 2014, al markhiya gallery relocated to Katara Cultural Village in Doha, establishing a permanent exhibition space. The vision of supporting emerging and established Arabic artists continues to develop.

Originally conceived in 2017 as a summer showcase, featuring Qatari and locally based artists, 50 x 50 has developed into an ongoing series of exhibitions, presenting affordable art aimed at first-time collectors.

Al markhiya gallery opens a second location at the Fire Station

In September 2017, a second gallery location was opened adjacent to Fire Station Studios. These two venues now host a diverse range of exhibitions throughout the year. al markhiya gallery champions and represents a distinct group acclaimed Arab artists in Qatar, the broader region, and across the world.

Titled Sketchbooks This was the first exhibition of artist made books to be exhibited at al markhiya. Featured Artists: Ahmed Nouh, Ali Hassan, Bouthayna Al Muftah, Fatma Al-Remaihi, Hassan Manasrah, Kholoud Al-Ali, Mohammed Atiq, Salman Al Malik, Yasser Al Mulla, Yousef Ahmad.

Al markhiya galley launches Process at Katara

The exhibition series Process explores what goes on in an artists’ process of making. Launched in 2020 this is an ongoing exhibition series. This first edition featured works by, Abdulaziz Yousef, Bachir Mohamad, Maryam Al-Semaitt, Nawar Al-Mutlaq, and Vajo.

Collaboration series is launched at the Katara gallery location

In an aim to promote synergies between different artists working in Doha, al markhiya gallery invited eight artists to work in pairs to collaborate and create a unique group exhibition. Collaboration set artists the task of developing ideas together utilising a wide variety of materials and methods to extend their creative language in new ways. The first edition featured works by: Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Amira Radhi, Almaha Nasser, Ameena Al-Boinin, Bachir Mohamad, Shouq Al Mana, Fatima Al-Sharshani, Ibrahim Al-Baker

Maghreb: Works from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, & Mauritania at the Fire Station

As part of al markhiya’s programme of exhibitions showcasing emerging and established artists from the Arab world, we began our 2022 season with a group exhibition focusing on a collection of artists specifically from the Maghreb region. The exhibition featured works by: Emna Zghal, Fethi Sahraoui, Halim Karabibene, Hamza Bounoua, Mahi Binebine, Nada Harib, Oumar Ball, Zakaria Ramhani

Source exhibition series launches at the Fire Station

As a creative experiment, al markhiya gallery invited a group of artists to each work with the same source material as their canvas – a simple wooden bowl. The artists were asked to contemplate and decorate these vessels, using their imagination and talent. Surprising transformations resulted and made up a collection of one-of-a-kind art objects.

Network at Katara a collaboration between galleries

The first in an ongoing series of collective exhibitions organised by al markhiya, in cooperation with a variety of galleries and prominent art institutions in the Arab world. For this inaugural edition, al markhiya gallery collaborated with Free Hand Gallery in Damascus, Syria. Together, these two dynamic organizations curated a special showcase, featuring a collection of unique small works created by artists from Qatar and the Arab world.
