Maryam Al-Homaid is an interdisciplinary artist and Assistant Professor in the Graphic Design Department at VCUArts Qatar. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master’s degree in Design Studies from VCUArts Qatar.
In her artistic practice, Al-Homaidexplores the rapid economic and social transformations in Qatar, reflecting shifts in lifestyle, language, behaviors, technology, and architecture. Rather than focusing on nostalgia, she celebrates the evolution of these memories over time.
Inspired by traditional carpet-making techniques, Al-Homaid integrates contemporary digital design with handcrafted woven textiles. Her process involves studying historical carpet patterns—such as stacking, mirroring, and freehand layouts—and reinterpreting them through a modern lens. She often collaborates with other artists, including Levi Hammett, to produce hand-dyed woven wool carpets. Her notable works include Urban Intervals, Doha Hangout, Elrayyan, El Wakrah, El Barriers, and Qatar Cities (Duo).
Al-Homaid’s work has been exhibited internationally, including at DesignEAST (Alserkal Art Week, Dubai, 2022), MAJAZ (Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha, 2022), Spread Wisdom Not War (UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, 2022), and Pearls of Wonder: US-Qatar Year of Culture Exhibition (Lavan541 Gallery, New York, 2022).
Through her innovative approach, Al-Homaid’s work becomes both an artistic record of regional transformation and a catalyst for dialogue, bridging past and present to engage audiences with the evolving narratives of her home.
