Hakim Ghazali

Hakim Ghazali is an internationally acclaimed artist whose work bridges traditional Moroccan artistic influences with contemporary global perspectives. His multifaceted practice spans painting, calligraphy, and conceptual art, often exploring themes of cultural identity, spirituality, and the interplay between tradition and modernity. With a career spanning nearly four decades, Ghazali has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions across Europe, The Middle East, Asia, and North America.

Born in Casablanca, Morocco, in 1966, Ghazali’s artistic journey began in Quranic school, where he developed an early appreciation for line, form, and color. He pursued formal studies in plastic arts in Casablanca and later received a scholarship from the Moroccan Ministry of Culture to study in France. While training in graphic design and printing in Amiens and Paris, he became deeply inspired by the morphology of letters—the study of the form, structure, and design of letters as visual symbols. This exploration of text and typography profoundly influenced his work.

Ghazali’s contributions to the arts extend beyond his personal practice. He is a member of the Moroccan Art Association, the International Association of Art (IAAP), UNESCO’s ‘House of Artists’ in Paris, and the ICAVA Institute of Contemporary African Visual Arts in New York. He also served as a Design Consultant for the Sharjah Department of Culture and Information.

His solo exhibitions have been held at prestigious venues, including the Hyatt Regency Art Gallery in Casablanca (1986), Beaux-Arts Gallery in Paris (2003), and Green Art Gallery in Dubai (2010). Group exhibitions have further amplified his global reach, with highlights such as the International Biennial in Saint-Quentin, France (1992), the Sacred Art Festival in Bordeaux (1997), and Art Basel in Switzerland (2014). Notable recent presentations include exhibitions at the Zurich Museum (2015), MH Art Gallery in Bilbao, Spain (2016), and Bab Rouah Art Gallery in Rabat, Morocco (2016-2017).

Ghazali’s talent has been recognized through numerous awards, including First Prize at the Artistes du Monde competition in Paris (2003) and First Prize in the Arabic Type Design Competition in Hamburg, Germany (2006). His contributions to Arabic calligraphy have also been acknowledged with accolades at competitions in the UAE (2007).

The Museum Fünf Kontinente in Munich highlights Ghazali’s work as a testament to the cultural richness of humanity. Dr. Christine Kron, Director of the museum, noted the acquisition of one of his pieces as a significant addition to their contemporary art collection, reflecting his originality and profound cultural insights.

His work has been sold at prominent auctions such as Christie’s Dubai (2007-2010) and Bonham’s (2008), and is held in notable collections worldwide, including the British Museum, the Written Art Foundation in Frankfurt, the Sharjah Art Museum, and the Museum Fünf Kontinente in Munich.
