Ali Hassan (b. 1956, Doha) is one of Qatar’s most celebrated artists. He began his training as a calligrapher in 1972 while working for local newspapers, gradually developing his distinctive style. In 1984, he attended a workshop at the University of Leuven in Belgium, followed by graphic arts courses in Cairo in 1986. Throughout his career, he has explored various media, creating semi-abstract compositions that blend vibrant colors with calligraphic elements and sculptural forms.
Although primarily self-taught, Hassan earned a BA in History from Qatar University in 1982. He received the State Encouragement Award in Fine Arts in 2005 and was honored by the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council in 2013. In 2021, he was appointed as anexpert in fine arts by the Ministry of Justice.
