al markhiya gallery presents the second chapter in a series of exhibitions titled, Paths. For this edition, we are proud to present a unique collection of works crafted by master contemporary artists working with watercolour.
In speaking about their creative practice, all four artists mention a profound personal connection to the natural world, and the vital need for humanity to realign with nature. Issues of heritage and culture are also present in their work, as they question how they play a significant role in creating the building blocks of identity.
Watercolour is an ancient tool, dating back to early cave paintings of palaeolithic Europe and manuscript illustration. Pigments are suspended in a water-based solution and the process of creation is very slow and time consuming. Using this method, the artists allow history and water to come together, providing a connection to the natural world. The works of Dr. Abdalla M Assaad, Husni Abukrayyiem, Salem Mathkour and Zaid Alzaidy also communicate a shared belief in the need for a simpler and more contemplative exploration of our existence, one that can also act as a foundation from which to dream.
