Kareem Risan was born in 1960 in Baghdad. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts at Baghdad University where he earned a BA in 1988. Kareem also studied media and photography at the Ontario Art Council in Toronto in 2010. Kareem currently lives and works in Toronto.
My current artistic practice continues and expands upon my earlier works, exploring walls as living surfaces that carry layers of memory, history, and human expression. Through fragments, markings, graffiti, posters, and traces of time, these works reflect the relationship between people and their environments, revealing both visible and hidden narratives.
