A unique collaborative exhibition featuring works by Qatari artists
Iltiqā: Memory & Material propose that shared heritage is not a fixed narrative but an evolving dialogue. The central installation on the ground floor of the gallery unites the physical presence of the land with the symbolic language of textiles, suggesting that identity is both grounded and fluid. On the first floor, a second series of collaborative works continues this conversation through references to folkloric traditions, incorporating a mix of natural and mass-produced materials. Together these multi-layered works reveal how belonging is constructed through touch, history and imagination.
The two celebrated contemporary artists based in Doha. Created specifically for the al markiya gallery space at the Fire Station Complex, Iltiqā: Memory & Material forms a dialog between the practices of the two sisters. Utilizing woven fabric and stone - materials central to both artists’ work and symbolizing the contrast between the ephemeral and the eternal - the exhibition brings their voices into convergence. Through a carefully curated series of immersive works, they explore how cultural identity is formed, inherited, and reimagined, reflecting on memory, materiality, and personal interpretation in relation to cultural nostalgia, and the tension between fragility and strength.
Iltiqā: Memory & Material invites viewers into an immersive space where ancestral memory and contemporary sensibility meet, held together by materials that metaphorically examine what the inheritance of culture means, and how our personal identity is shaped through collective histories and familial bonds.
