Adel Khalaf Because as humans our frailty prevents us from revealing our weakness, sadness or pain, we hide behind humor, laughter and playfulness.  Despite ourselves, we use this absurdity to confront tragedy. My portraits and ensemble sketches contain all the core elements of artificial playfulness yet they expose the veneer to reveal the pain beneath. My charcoal, pencil and acrylic artworks deliberately impose a dark, bleak vision directly contrasted by the incongruous humor in each piece.

Waseem Al Marzouki When first encountering the work of Syrian Doha-based artist Waseem Marzouki, the image of imposing social structures emerges, imbued with a historical dimension that is deeply political. And yet the work is not immediately didactic; delicate blueprints mingle alongside handwritten and calligraphic elements, and lush organic forms envelop and mingle with synthetic, mechanized ones that seem to evade specific historical categorization. Could these be missing blueprints for the region, the dreams of an architect of the explosive energy politics of this region? And can the will of this imagined designer impose itself on people, history, and the earth itself through the confines and power of the line present in borders and design? Marzouki’s own experiences, political awareness and deeply historical inquisitiveness, drawn out through conversations in both his quiet and dramatically lit studio and in the bustle of public spaces, help to illuminate these aspects of his work. The artist, preferring to allow the audience to make connections in his work rather than deliver punchline-meanings, speaks of his influences, artistic development, and growing up in a little known town in northern Syria.”
